Former Amoco Refinery, Sugar Creek, Missouri
Site Location
East Kansas City, Missouri, metropolitan area
Site Description
A refinery in the eastern Kansas City metropolitan area was closed and dismantled in the late 1980s, with portions of the 300-acre site still in use as a pipeline storage/distribution facility and wood treatment chemical distributor. BTEX and other compounds have been detected in groundwater, soil gas, soil, and the air inside some residences. Approximately 500 residents in the area were involved in a class action settlement for property value decreases. Litigation is over, but residents remain concerned about the site's impact on public health/environment and cleanup plans.
Organization Requesting Assistance
Originally an informal community group called CLEANUP. At present TOSC participates in a city-sponsored work group. No formal agreement with any group is in place. There is no Community Advisory Group (CAG) at this site.
Beginning Date of Assistance
November 1998
Summary of TOSC Assistance
TOSC personnel have participated in meetings with concerned residents and state/federal regulators involved with this site. Information has been provided to concerned residents on MTBE, cleanup standards, and phytoremediation. TOSC attended scheduled meetings at the Sugar Creek city hall and prepared educational articles for the Sugar Creek city newsletters on topics relevant to the site.
