Former Black Hills Army Depot, South Dakota
Site Location
Approximately 10 miles southwest of Edgemont, in the southwest corner of South Dakota
Site Description
This 21,000-acre site housed industrial storage, administrative, housing, and related support facilities and activities for the Department of Defense. The depot was used to store, test, repair, or destroy conventional and chemical warfare munitions. This included small arms and high explosive ammunition, chemical ammunition, ammunition components, chemical toxins, and general supplies. Chemical ammunition and toxins stored at the depot included white phosphorous, sulfur mustard, cyanogen chloride, phosgene, and nerve agents. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is now working to identify and reduce environmental risks created by former Department of Defense activities.

Summary of TOSC Assistance
Community concerns include hazards to livestock from pollution, adequacy of sampling, and dangers of unexploded ordnance (UXO). TOSC has prepared a Letter of Intent for support, attended numerous Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) meetings, and reviewed many technical documents for the community. TOSC has also held presentations, demonstrations, and a training session to summarize technical document reviews and to provide background information on topics of concern.
NOTE: The EPA TOSC and TOSNAC programs have ended.
