Former Amoco Refinery, Sugar Creek, Missouri

Site Location

East Kansas City, Missouri, metropolitan area

Site Description

A refinery in the eastern Kansas City metropolitan area was closed and dismantled in the late 1980s, with portions of the 300-acre site still in use as a pipeline storage/distribution facility and wood treatment chemical distributor. BTEX and other compounds have been detected in groundwater, soil gas, soil, and the air inside some residences. Approximately 500 residents in the area were involved in a class action settlement for property value decreases. Litigation is over, but residents remain concerned about the site's impact on public health/environment and cleanup plans.
