Lucent Technologies Orinoco PC Card:

We have verified that the Lucent Technologies Orinoco works with our network. This card seems to be able to get a connection from most parts of first floor Fiedler and Rathbone.

Installation instructions for Windows 2000:

  1. Make sure that you are logged into your Windows 2000 computer as Administrator (or an account with equivilant rights). A non-Administrator account will not be able to install the hardware drivers for your new card.
  2. Insert the CD that came with your card. A menu should automatically pop up on your screen, but if it does not, go to My Computer, browse to your CD drive, and then run Setup.exe.

  3. Click on Install Software. Click on Client Manager; allow the software to run, accepting all of the default settings. Read through the readme.txt file that comes up on your screen. Then close Notepad.
  4. The Setup screen should still be open on your computer. Click on Windows 2000 Driver. This will uncompress the Windows 2000 driver to your local hard drive, in C:\Program Files\Orinoco\Drivers. You will then be prompted to reboot, click OK to reboot.
  5. Either insert your network card into your computer while the BIOS is checking hardware, or else wait until after you are logged into Windows 2000. Windows 2000 should detect the card and begin the driver installation. The Found New Hardware Wizard will start up. Select Next. Then select Search for a suitable driver. Select Specify a location. Click Browse, and then browse to your CD drive. Browse to C:\Program Files\Orinoco\Drivers and click OK. Screenshot of Orinoco Setup Utility
  6. After the driver is installed, the Add/Edit Configuration Profile window should pop up. If it does not, go to Start -> Programs -> ORiNOCO -> PC Card Settings. Change Default to k-state to differientiate between any other wireless LANs that you might use, and then click Edit Profile.

  7. On the Basic tab, enter the network name k-state.net.
  8. On the Encryption tab, check the Enable Data Security checkbox, select the Use Hexadecimal option, and put in Key 1 the 40 bit encryption key (currently available only from on-campus computers).
  9. Click OK.
After installing the software, you should be able to access the Internet after rebooting (or by obtaining an IP address manually with ipconfig /renew from a command prompt).

NOTE: If this is not a new card (you are just reconfiguring an existing card for use with our network), you may need to setup your card to use DHCP before you will be able to access the Internet.
