The Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP), established in 1977, is a comprehensive program designed to identify, recruit, educate and graduate multicultural students who have an aptitude for math or science. MEP provides a support base to foster academic and social growth and assists student transition into corporate society upon graduation. At KSU, students enter a program that is the home of several national fellowship recipients who have benefited from MEP. Engineering students of color are involved in key leadership positions within the College of Engineering and throughout the university. MEP students excel scholastically at K-State. During the previous two semesters, 35 percent of the multicultural engineering students earned 3.0 or better grade point averages. The MEP office is open 8 a.m.- 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Students and parents are welcome to visit the MEP office (Rathbone 1056). The Multicultural Engineering Program provides various types of services to underrepresented engineering students of color.
ACADEMIC, PERSONAL, AND CAREER ADVISING MEP provides academic, personal and career advising to multicultural freshmen engineering students. If requested, any multicultural engineering student may receive academic advising prior to being advised by their department advisor. All multicultural engineering students receive career and personal advising upon request.
MEP students who earn a 3.0+ grade point average are eligible for various scholarships offered by Kansas State University, the College of Engineering, MEP and corporate industrial sponsors. MEP also has scholarship support from the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME). The GPA requirements for the MEP NACME academic/service scholarships begin at 2.5 cumulative GPA for freshmen and increase to 2.8 for seniors. Traditional federal scholarships and loans are awarded on the basis of need.
Kansas State University, the College of Engineering, various academic departments and MEP provide free academic tutoring services to any eligible engineering students for classes. Peer tutors are high grade-point-average students who are committed to excellence and are willing to tutor one-on-one or to small groups. The Multicultural Study Center is open seven days a week, for MEP students who wish to be tutored or to study in small groups. The study center houses student organizations' bulletin boards and provides a environment conducive to learning. Additionally, the study center is adjacent to both a computer laboratory and the Feidler Engineering Library.
ENGINEERING ORIENTATION CLASSES (DEN 120 & DEN 220) The Multicultural Enrichment Seminar (DEN 120) is offered to freshman and transfer multicultural engineering students each fall semester. The seminar provides an introduction to the academic and intellectual demands of an engineering curriculum from a multicultural perspective. The seminar assists students to develop group cohesiveness and an attitude of mutual support. The seminar also helps students:
The Multicultural Engineering Colloquim (DEN 220) is offered to multicultural engineering students each spring semester. The course provides:
The MEP has a peer mentoring program in which incoming freshmen and transfer students are matched by race, gender and engineering major with current high grade point average engineering students. The enrollment mentor meets with the new student throughout the first semester and is available to prepare the student to speak to their advisor for pre-enrollment.
The MEP is an advisor to three multicultural engineering organizations:
INTERNSHIPS, CO-OPS, AND JOB PLACEMENT ASSISTANCE The MEP assists students in finding summer and part-time internship in industry as well as co-op positions. As students near graduation, MEP assists in locating permanent employment positions or in enrolling in graduate school.
