White Team 2011

Purple Team 2011
The purpose of the annual Engineering and Science Summer Institute (ESSI)is to create an opportunity for high school students to learn about engineering, as well as physics, chemistry, biology, and math. Various lectures and labs are offered by KSU faculty in an effort to illustrate some of the problems and challenges that face us in the next few decades. ESSI 2012 markes the 47th year the institute has introduced students to engineering and science.
The program is designed to aid the student in determining his/her interests both in college and beyond. The morning sessions will focus on career discovery and learning about the various engineering and science disciplines. The afternoon sessions provide a time to focus on the discipline in more detail using a laboratory experience.
In addition, those attending will have opportunities for leadership and to learn about campus life. A few participants will have the opportunity to organize events and lead small group activities. Special emphasis will be placed on teams and working on team projects. The evenings are designed for social interaction.
In an effort to create a higher learning atmosphere, not all applicants to ESSI are accepted. Therefore, as participants of ESSI, you are expected to fully participate in all events. We are excited to have you on campus and are eager to have you be a part of this long tradition of excellence.
ESSI 2011 participants test their abilities during a team building activity.
How do I attend ESSI?
To register students need to complete an application (ESSI brochure application or online registration). Their counselor, gifted facilitator, or teacher (math or science) should also have an application available. Please complete the application form and enclose an unofficial high school transcript with the $125 deposit (see more below). Participants accepted to the institute will be notified within 3 weeks of receiving application. Selection of student applicants is based primarily on career interest and grade average.
Who is Eligible?
ESSI is open to all high school students who have completed their sophomore or junior year (graduates are not eligible) and who have completed enough courses in math and science to indicate an aptitude in these areas.
What is the cost to enroll?
The student early bird registration cost for the 2012 institute is $395 which includes housing, meals, and supplies. Late / Final registration cost is $450. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available. A deposit of $125.00 is due with the application, or participants may pay the full amount at that time. Registration fees will be returned only to those students that are not accepted into the program. Students may take ESSI for 1-hour of college credit (optional). Tuition fees are extra.
