Engineers use expertise in science, mathematics, and problem solving to provide solutions for environmental problems in multiple areas. An environmental engineer may work to improve indoor air quality in buildings, prevent pollution, or protect and improve water quality in community or rural settings.
The College of Engineering offers long established degrees in Biological Systems Engineering and Civil Engineering . Both of these degrees provide an Environmental Engineering Option, creating a versatile, high demand engineer with the ability to work in environmental engineering and other engineering areas.
Biological Systems engineers provide engineering solutions to environmental problems in rural areas, develop green spaces, and protect water resources.
Civil Engineers provide engineering solutions to environmental problems in urban areas or communities, protect environmental quality in urban environment, and develop water resource protection systems.
Areas of Study
Architectural Engineers provide integrated building systems . Building systems include mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection and building communication and control systems to meet stringent energy and environmental building codes and standards. Many architectural engineering classes deal with the various engineering and design requirements to assure a safe indoor environment and to protect the environment during building construction.
Computer scientists provide computing and simulation expertise for environmental modeling.
Electrical Engineers work in renewable energy systems design. Students in Electrical and Computer Engineering work with wind and solar energy applications including turbine, solar panel, and electrical grid design.
Mechanical Engineers work in environmental engineering of mechanical systems including engines, pipelines, and industrial facilities. Mechanical engineers at K-State work with environmental control systems to improve energy efficiency and emissions.
Students studying environmental engineering may obtain a secondary major in Natural Resources and Environmental Systems.
