Mentors for International Experiences, or MIE, was started in the Spring of 2002 in the College of Engineering through an effort by the Steel Ring Honor Society. We believe that gaining personal experience with other cultures is increasingly important in our global society. These experiences will enhance an individual’s academic, professional, and personal development thereby enabling the individual to perform engineering tasks benefiting the diverse societies of the world. We seek to promote these experiences by encouraging K-Staters to study abroad and also by welcoming and assisting international students during their time in Manhattan.

Over the last few semesters, our organziation has started a buddy program for incoming international engineering students. By matching international students with K-State students, it is our hope that we can help them more easily adapt to the University and the city of Manhattan and also give them a broader look into the life of a K-State student. This program keeps improving every semester and we hope in the future it can continue to expand and allow us to reach an even broader scope of students.

Isaac Mark (MIE President) is a fifth year Senior studying Electrical and Computer Engineering with a Minor in German. He spent a year in Giessen Germany. "It is unbelievable how fast a year can go by. My year in Germany was an awesome experience that I wouldn't trade for anything. I made friends from all over the Globe, many of whom I still keep in touch with. There were opportunities to travel, make a short trip to Budapest or Paris for the weekend, ride in a Gondola in Venice, or have a cultural drink in the Hofbrauhaus in Munich. I even got to live with seven German's last year. It is a great feeling when you step out of your norm and just do something completely out of the ordinary. There was this one experience where I was in a train car with four Italians. I spoke no Italian and they didn't speak any English or German. We tried to communicate with hand gestures and limited vocabulary until one of them held up a glass of water, pointed to it and said "Water", then I pointed back and said "Aqua." It was then that we had reached contact. It is these kinds of life changing experiences that one can live, going abroad for a period of time. I would highly recommend it to anyone. By expanding on one's experiences, only then, can we truly get to know ourselves and our neighbors abroad. It will not only give you a new perspective but it will change your life!!!" MIE also provides current K-State engineering students with information and advice on studying abroad. Because many of our members have studied and traveled abroad in a wide variety of places, we have a broad range of experiences from which we can assist students. We hold Open Forums every semester where students are free to ask questions regarding any facet of studying abroad to a panel of our members. We also participate in various events around campus such as the International Fair and Open House as well as other events in conjunction with the Office of International Programs.

MIE hopes that these efforts to promote international experiences through both people and places can have a positive impact not only on individuals, but also on the entire world around us.
