The DEPSCoR Program

The national DEPSCoR program emphasizes single investigator awards of high interest to DoD. Multiple investigator proposals are allowed but must clearly focus on a single project. Each DEPSCoR state submits a package of proposals for these individually fundable projects. Key considerations in the success of DEPSCoR proposals include.

  • Demonstrate strong technical merit.
  • Address critical needs of one or more DoD agencies.
  • Strong endorsement from the cognizant DoD program manager.
  • Build research infrastructure (people, equipment) in the state.
Researchers intending to submit proposals to the DEPSCoR program should be aware that the national funding for this program has been cut considerably in the past several years. Funding for FY 07 was only $7M for the whole national program and indications are that it will be substantially lower in FY08. Researchers should not see DEPSCoR as the only avenue or entry point for obtaining DoD funding. If you are submitting a proposal through DEPSCoR, you should also be seeking funding through other programs as well. The DEPSCoR program alone does not offer a very high probability of success given the low level of national funding.

The Kansas DEPSCoR Program

The Kansas Program selects proposals from Kansas to be submitted to the national DEPSCoR competition. There are four steps to the Program. Please refer to the RFP for complete information.

  • Pre-proposals must be submitted by August 31, 2007. Institutional endorsements are not required on pre-proposals.
  • The proposals will be reviewed by a selection committee and three of the pre-proposals will be selected.
  • Principle Investigators for the selected pre-proposals submit full proposal to the Program. The proposal must conform to the DoD solicitation guidelines. The Kansas DEPSCoR Director works with PIs of the selected proposals to address any questions that arise in the review and selection process.
Once completed and fully executed by the home institution, these proposals constitute the Kansas package submitted to the national DEPSCoR competition.
