  • Douglas McGregor, MNE professor, and his team of researchers designed and developed a micro-structured semiconductor neutron detector that was given a 2009 R&D 100 Award, sponsored by R&D Magazine, which recognizes the year's 100 most technologically significant new products introduced into the marketplace.

  • The Pollution Prevention Institute at K-State has received the 2009 National Pollution Prevention Roundtable Most Valuable Pollution Prevention Program award for its intern program.

  • Engineering Extension Services at K-State, as a partner in the Midwest Universities Radon Consortium, has assumed administration of national radon services and projects, formerly provided by the National Safety Council for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

  • K-State’s architectural engineering student team took first place in the 2009 ASHRAE Student Design Competition in Louisville, Ky.

  • The biological and agricultural engineering robotics team took first place in the ASABE Robotics Student Design Competition at the 2009 ASABE Annual Meeting.

  • Ray Yunk, associate professor of architectural engineering and construction science, has become the first university faculty member in the world to be certified as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional in building design and construction.

  • Four Kansas State University students in construction science and management tied for first place in 2009 among 50 teams in an international concrete construction competition sponsored by the American Concrete Institute.

  • K-State's American Society of Automotive Engineering aero design team, with their entry "The Purple Berserker," placed first overall in the regular class event at the 2009 Aero Design West international competition.

  • Krista Walton, assistant professor of chemical engineering, is a 2009 recipient of a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the nation's highest honor for professionals at the outset of their independent scientific research careers.

  • The College of Engineering master’s degree distance education program has earned a Best Buy ranking from the national editorial review team, GetEducated.com, LLC.

  • In the past six years, more than 12 students have been recognized nationally as outstanding students of their disciplines.

  • The K-State College of Engineering is home to the Institute for Environmental Research, the first of its kind in the world to be located on a college campus.

  • K-State's Civil Infrastructures Systems Laboratory houses one of six accelerated testing facilities in the nation, capable of testing large-scale pavement, structural, and bridge elements.

  • The College of Engineering has the second largest architectural engineering program in the nation and has been selected by the journal, Consulting & Specifying Engineer, as the preferred source for entry-consulting engineers.

  • The K-State National Gas Machinery Laboratory is the natural gas industry's leading independent turbocharger research and development test facility.

  • The Advanced Manufacturing Institute at Kansas State received one of only five major grants given by the Society of Manufacturing Engineer's Education Foundation to advance innovative manufacturing engineering education and training at its Manufacturing Learning Center.

  • The K-State Student Chapter of Associated General Contractors has won more first, second, and third place national awards for Outstanding Student Chapter than any other of the 150 chapters in the country.

  • AMI has been named a Fabricators and Manufacturers Association Education Center-one of only nine in the world.

  • The Powercat Tractors Design Team took second place in the 2009 American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers International Quarter-Scale Tractor Student Design Competition. K-State has placed in the top three, including seven firsts, continuously since 1999.

  • Elizabeth Voigt, ME, was named a 2008 Fulbright Scholar.

  • Seventeen students in the K-State College of Engineering were initiated into the prestigious Phi Kappa Phi national academic honor society in 2008-2009.

  • Derek Woodman, CMPEN, was named a national Tau Beta Pi Fellow for 2008-09.

  • Andrew Harris, IE; and Stacey Ahern, IE, were awarded 2008-09 national Tau Beta Pi Scholarships.

  • A recent power upgrade has made K-State’s nuclear reactor in the department of mechanical and nuclear engineering the fifth highest-powered university reactor in the country. The department now operates the only university research nuclear reactor in an 11-state contiguous region of the Plains states.

  • The department of civil engineering has received federal funding to establish a National Research Center for Rural Transportation Infrastructure and Safety.

  • The department of civil engineering has established the nation's first formal interdisciplinary certificate program on geoenvironmental sciences and engineering.

  • Six engineering students have been awarded Morris K. Udall Scholarships since 2000, the most recent, Nicholas Long, ARE, 2008.

  • The K-State American Society of Civil Engineers Student Chapter has received national Certificates of Commendation 12 times since 1990. These certificates are awarded to student chapters ranked in the top 10 percent nationwide.

  • Kevin Lease, assoc. professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering, selected as one of nine outstanding engineering educators by the Society of Automotive Engineers.
