NLW Projects Sponsored by NEER

  • NLW Testing/Training Range at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

The U.S. Army Maneuver Support Center uses a former pistol and shotgun range to train soldiers and marines in the use of nonlethal weapons. The purpose of NEER’s environmental assessment is to evaluate nonlethal weapons presently used or proposed for use at this range, and to document environmental conditions for all of Fort Leonard Wood for future assessments of nonlethal training activities in other areas of the fort.

  • Malodorants and Irritants

Malodorants and irritants are two types of nonlethal weapons designed to temporarily mark, incapacitate, or drive away persons from an area. NEER is performing environmental assessments on the malodorants Bathroom Malodor and Who-Me?, and the irritants Oleoresin Capsicum (OC), CS-Mace, and CN-Mace.

  • Running Gear Entanglement System

A running gear entanglement system (RGES) is proposed to protect Navy ships in port, and other waterside assets such as museums and marinas. The RGES will deliver an entanglement device which will foul the propeller of unauthorized vessels attempting to approach restricted areas. NEER is performing an environmental assessment of RGES to evaluate potential impacts associated with its use and disposal.

  • Pulsed-Energy Projectile

A pulsed-energy projectile (PEP) is under development that uses a chemical laser technology to produce a large flash, bang, and shock wave to temporarily disorient and incapacitate individuals in a crowd. NEER is conducting an environmental assessment of materials comprising the weapon system and its byproducts.

  • Advanced Tactical Laser

The advanced tactical laser (ATL) concept involves an infrared laser carried in an aircraft for air-to-ground strike missions, providing pinpoint accuracy and minimum damage. The environmental assessment by NEER will examine life-cycle environmental issues for the ATL technology.

  • Anti-Traction Material

Anti-traction material (ATM) is a very slippery, gel-like substance sprayed on ground surfaces to prevent access to areas by people and vehicles. NEER is performing laboratory studies and field work to identify and evaluate potential environmental concerns.

  • Nonlethal Airburst Munitions

Nonlethal airburst munitions are 20mm weapons designed to emplace liquids, aerosols, powders and other objects at a precise location in space. NEER will assess information about operational and environmental issues relevant to this system.

  • Thermobaric Technology

Thermobaric technology is a nonlethal weapon, in development, that causes extended flash, sound, temperature, and pressure conditions to disorient and/or temporarily incapacitate individuals. NEER will assess the materials proposed for use in this technology.
