About the NEER Consortium

Mission Statement

The National Environmental Evaluation and Remediation Consortium (NEER) addresses complex environmental issues which affect the health and safety of our air, water, and land. Its focus encompasses environmental problems which cross the spectrum of federal, state, and local responsibilities. NEER accomplishes its mission through scientific research, environmental training, independent assessment, technology transfer, and community services/assistance with a unique teaming approach of integrating scientific and operational problem solvers.

NEER Consortium Partnerships

The NEER Consortium core partnerships include Kansas State University (K-State), the Great Plains/Rocky Mountain Hazardous Substance Research Center (GP/RM HSRC), Nanoscale Materials, Inc., and M2 Technologies, Inc. Each partner brings expertise to the consortium as listed below:

Kansas State University

K-State has a number of well-established research programs and collaborative interactions of relevance to environmental evaluation and remediation.

  • Konza Prairie Biological Station

The K-State Division of Biology manages this unique 8,600-acre living laboratory for ecosystem research. As a National Science Foundation (NSF)-funded, long-term ecological research (LTER) site, it serves as the focus for many extramurally funded research programs in basic ecological science and grassland ecosystems, and in the role of fire, grazing, and climatic variability in regulating ecosystem structure and function.

  • K-State Wildlife and Fisheries Cooperative Research Unit

This unit facilitates and enhances cooperation between state and federal agencies having research interests in ecological and environmental science. It was established and is funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior.

  • GIS Database Development

The K-State Geographic Information Systems and Spatial Analysis Laboratory (GISSAL) has an excellent track record of developing and analyzing GIS databases for the monitoring of environmental parameters.

  • Institute for Environmental Research

This laboratory has especially constructed environmental chambers, an airplane cabin, auto cabins, and associated instrumentation for air quality research with emphasis on temperature, humidity, and particulates.

  • National Institute for Land Management and Training

The National Institute provides nationwide technical support for the U.S. Army Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) Program and related activities. It offers natural resources conservation and management services, GIS assistance, R&D for land management systems, and creates educational materials using video, computer-based multimedia training and distance learning.

  • GP/RM HSRC

The Great Plains/Rocky Mountain Hazardous Substance Research Center, led by K-State, includes 14 university members. The HSRC was established with funding provided by the Environmental Protection Agency to conduct research pertaining to hazardous substances produced through agriculture, forestry, mining, mineral processing, and other activities. It serves the ten states in US EPA Regions 7 and 8.

NanoScale Materials, Inc.

Nanoscale Materials, Inc. is a leader in the development of dry powder decontamination technologies capable of neutralizing chemical and biological agents, and remediation of associated environmental impacts.

M2 Technologies, Inc.

M2 Technologies, Inc. provides expertise in program development, requirements, identification and generation, implementation, and execution support. M2 yields proven management techniques that help coordinate targeted projects and provides the focal point for institutional planning, policies, and associated processes.

CABEM Technologies

CABEM Technologies recommends, develops, builds, integrates and deploys Information Technology (IT) Solutions tailored to the needs of each customer. CABEM provides solutions to progressive companies of all sizes, academic institutions, and the military.

Services

The NEER Consortium, through the synergy of its partners, provides ecological and environmental services through scientific research, environmental training, technology transfer, community-based assistance, technical and operational consulting, and acting as an independent, uniquely qualified third-party assessor. These services are based on past work that has been provided to the U.S. Departments of Defense, Energy, Agriculture, Justice; the Environmental Protection Agency; and related state and local agencies, including state and local law enforcement.

Successes

The GP/RM HSRC has provided leadership in the development of phytoremediation technologies and their applications. Nanoscale Materials, Inc. produces destructive adsorbents that have air quality applications. M2 Technologies, Inc. is a leader in advancing nonlethal technologies and has experience in national security programs and the resolution of domestic conflicts.
