Technology Transfer & R2D2 Contacts

R2D2

The R2D2 program is administered by the EPA HSRC program, which performs basic and applied research, technology transfer, and training in the area of hazardous substance issues. Five multi-university centers, each located in a pair of federal EPA regions, focus on developing better, cheaper, faster, and safer methods to assess and clean up contaminated sites. They bring together scientists and engineers from a variety of disciplines to collaborate on integrated research projects. General focus areas at each center include in situ bioremediation (Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic), contaminated soils and mining wastes (Great Plains/Rocky Mountain), industrial waste (Northeast), contaminated sediments (South and Southwest), and groundwater cleanup and site remediation (Western). Each center has its own science advisory committee and technology transfer and training advisory committee, which review progress of ongoing work and rank proposals for funding.

In addition to the R2D2 program, two other special programs relevant to the DoD operate under the HSRC umbrella -- the Minority Academic Institutions (MAI) program and the Technical Outreach Services to Communities (TOSC) program.

MAI

MAI's initiative involves faculty and students from historically Black, Hispanic, and Native American institutions. Recent projects with Native American colleges include a satellite-delivered seminar program and funding of proposals for environmental research, technology transfer, and training.

TOSC

The TOSC program provides technical assistance to communities in dealing with hazardous substance issues. The program provides an information hotline, workshops, site assistance, and technical and educational programs for communities. Community groups at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal (Colorado), Pine Ridge Bombing Range (South Dakota), and the Black Hills Army Ammunition Plant (South Dakota) are three of the sites receiving support under this program.
