57A TEAM APPROACH TO CLEANING UP THE IOWA ARMY AMMUNITION PLANT |
R. Allison, Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, D. Romitti, US Army Environmental Center, K. Howe, US Army Corps of Engineers, and K. Herstowski and S. Marquess, US Environmental Protection Agency, Region 7 |
The presentation will focus on partnering aspects employed by the Arrny and EPA Region 7 to expedite the CERCLA cleanup of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant Superfund site. The primary contaminants of concern at the site are explosives (TNT, RDX). The team has employed a practical approach using on-site facilities to contain low-level threats, with an intent to treat the most highly contaminated materials. A pilot study is planned for the spring of 1997 to evaluate a bioslurry treatment process for treating explosives-contaminated soil. The presentation will focus on this and other innovative technical and regulatory approaches adopted to facilitate site clean-up in a cost-effective manner.
Key words: bioslurry, explosives-contaminated soil, site cleanup
