The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has given the option of completing a Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP) in lieu of payment of an environmental penalty. The option of completing a SEP is granted based on the eligibility criteria.
These criteria include timeliness, compliance record, compliance status, technical and economic capability, economic benefit of noncompliance, and project criteria. Eligible projects will fall into one of the following categories: waste prevention, waste reduction, environmental restoration, environmental audits, or public awareness. The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) is fulfilling its responsibility under an approved SEP. The SEP falls within the category of public awareness. Being an educational institution, KUMC has many resources available to provide information to the public. The outreach activities focus primarily on Kansas hospitals and are providing resources related to hazardous materials and hazardous waste management. These tools are also available to any hazardous waste generator in Kansas. The outreach activities are multi-faceted. One facet utilizes the information superhighway; another involves 8 hour seminars presented at several locations in the state; and a third facet involves 1 to 3 hour workshops on specific issues utilizing distance education. The SEP is providing the University of Kansas Medical Center the opportunity to provide public awareness regarding the management of hazardous materials and hazardous waste to generators in the State of Kansas. Key words: environmental penalty, hazardous materials, hazardous waste management, outreach activities
