PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF HYDROMETALLURGICAL PROCESS FOR OXIDIZED WASTE TREATMENT

O'Keefe, Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Research Center, University of Missouri-Rolla, Rolla, MO 65409-1170 The inability to economically separate oxidized iron compounds from a variety of industrial wastes is a major concern to the primary metals industry. A unique hydrometallurgical process, galvanic stripping, has been developed to address this problem.

To date, primary interest has been on optimizing the parameters which affect iron removal. The results from this segment of the research have now been used to make a preliminary design for a flow sheet envisioned for commercial application.

A summary of the influence of the various operating conditions is given. Specific quantitative data are shown for the use of a Zn-Pb alloy in the iron removal process. The materials balance for a proposed flow sheet with a feed solution of 30 m3 per hour is presented, a design made using Metsim software. Some introductory data on potential measurements and impurity distribution with cycling is also given.
