SubjectThanks for a great year!
MessageAs my last blog entry of the year, I'd like to say thanks to everyone who contributed to a great year of ESC. Special recognition goes to our members of the year: freshman Blake Brosa, sophomore Shawn Cowley, junior Tim Weninger, and all the seniors on the Exec Council (Josh Van Meter, Eric Dufur, Roland Craddolph, Isaac Mark, Shannon Timmons, and Jarret Rice). I enjoyed my time as President and learned a great deal; and I look forward to another great year ahead of us!

SubjectE-Ball and Founders Luncheon ~ November 5, 2005
MessageTickets are on sale in the atrium now until next Monday for E-Ball. For only $15, students have the chance to meet distinguished alumni at a formal event, attend a fantastic dinner (main course is strip steak), and enjoy a night of dancing. Thanks to all who will be helping with the event, and I encourage everyone to attend.

Plans are progressing as well for the Founder's Luncheon to be held for selected students and alumni earlier in the day. The focus of the luncheon will be the expression of our thanks to these donors for their generosity, and we hope the event will become an annual tradition.

SubjectRegional Conference a Success!
MessageSeveral members of ESC attended the NAESC Central Region's Conference, hosted by Oklahoma State University, from October 13-16. The trip was not only fun, but also informative and provided us with a lot of great new ideas to implement in some form with our council. We also received the "Best Dressed Council" award. Members in attendance were Lisa Kitten, Josh Van Meter, Amy Bartak, Eric Dufur, Brandon Sager, Ryan Hearn, Nick Hesse, Tim Weninger, Ally Day, Roland Craddolph, and Blake Brosa. Come to our Meeting October 31 for a presentation on the conference, and stop by the photo page for a few shots of our activities!

SubjectABET Visit ~ October 16-18
MessageABET will be visiting the College of Engineering from October 16-18. The visit will include visits to classes and labs; interviews/discussions with students, faculty, and staff; organization presentations; analysis of curriculums, objectives, and outcomes; and more. Students should know what program outcomes and objectives are (see syllabi) and be prepared to answer questions about their personal experiences at K-State (i.e. advising, etc.) ABET accreditation is essential to the value of a program's degree, so we need to be sure to show our pride in the College of Engineering!

SubjectMeeting w/Org Presidents ~ 9/15/05
MessageOn Thursday the 15th, I met with Angela Cunningham of the Dean's Office, Dr. Gallagher, and the presidents of Ambassadors, Toastmasters, Tau Beta Pi, and Steel Ring. We discussed our schedules, then focused on funding issues. Dr. Gallagher was able to alleviate much confusion on the topic. Here are a few key points as I understood them:

College-wide organizations (ESC, those listed above, and possibly a few other) are to make requests directly to SGA
Case by case requests by organizations are to be made to SGA
Requests to the Dean's Office are made for the entire year. For college-wide organizations, 100% of the money typically comes from the Dean. For department-based organizations, the Dean's Office and Department generally split 50-50.
The other major topic was Telefund. Increasing enthusiasm and participation is critical, and all ideas are welcome!

We will also try to clarify the funding process at both the college and university levels. Additionally, we will talk about the possibility of a meeting to explain the new rules to all interested engineering organization presidents.

SubjectE-Ball ~ General Information
MessageE-Ball will be held Saturday, November 5 at the Alumni Center. I was able to attend a task force meeting on August 23 about the event and have put together some basic things all ESC members should know.

~ E-Ball, short for Engineer's Ball, is formally called the Seaton Society Banquet and Ball and is sponsored by the Seaton Society. Members of the Society have contributed a minimum of $500 directly to the College of Engineering.

~ Students will be needed for valet parking, coat check, and help at the reception desk (nametags and corsages mainly).

~ The task force is hoping to increase student presence and involvement and has several ideas. One is a Founder's Luncheon in which Founders ($100,000+ lifetime) and givers of a "major gift" this year ($10,000+) will eat with ESC members and/or some of the top students in the College of Engineering. A second idea is an after-party, possibly in the atrium, hosted by ESC. The dance tends to end quite early, and they think it would be nice for students--who are accustomed to staying up late--and those alumni who want to talk longer or have more time to mingle with students to have a place to go. The final idea was running names of attending guests through the scholarship database to see if the guest's contribution was funding a specific student's scholarship, then notifying the student that he or she could meet the donor at the banquet.

MessageTim's expertise will be put to great use on our new website. Based on discussions at the exec meeting on Monday the 12th, I will be preparing a blueprint of sorts for him so that work can begin when he gets the access, etc., that he needs. The site will tenatively include Home, Information Center, Member List, Calendar, Links, and Get Involved as major headings. The Information Center will be most important to current members, as it will include the President's Blog, committee lists, and member status.
