Sustainability @ K-State - KSU President’s Perspective, Kirk Schulz

Kirk H. Schulz as the 13th president of Kansas State University. Schulz is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Most recently, he served as vice president for research and economic development at Mississippi State University. He is a member of ABET, the recognized accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering and technology. He is also a member of its Engineering Accreditation Commission, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and also the American Society for Engineering Education. In recognition of his work in chemical engineering, he was named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2007 and a Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education in 2008. Overview of K-State’s Sustainability Task Force, Ben Champion

Ben Champion, a 2002 K-State graduate and Rhodes scholar, has been appointed to the newly formed position of director of sustainability for the university, tasked with developing a university-wide approach for addressing sustainability at K-State. Champion will provide leadership and oversight to existing initiatives such as campus recycling and construction of green buildings on campus, but he will also identify opportunities for new initiatives, help develop curriculum, facilitate interdisciplinary research, work with students, and engage the broader community in areas where K-State can be a leader in terms of sustainability. He earned K-State bachelor's degrees in chemistry, natural resources and environmental sciences with minors in Spanish and political science in 2002. He is a 2003 Rhodes scholar who in January of this year completed a doctoral degree in geography at Oxford University researching sustainable food systems. For additional information, please go to:

Sustainable Energy, Noel Schulz

Noel Schulz is a Paslay Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Kansas State University. Her research interests are in the computer applications in power systems including power system operations, shipboard power systems and intelligent system applications. Recent awards of Dr. Schulz are the MSU Presidential Commission on the Status of Women Outstanding Woman Faculty Member 2008, Inductee to the MSU Bagley College of Engineering Academy of Teaching Excellence, 2008 and MSU Bagley College of Engineering Outstanding Engineering Educator, 2007. Dr. Schulz is active in the IEEE Power & Energy Society serving as Secretary from 2004-2007 and Treasurer from 2008-2009. She is currently running for PES President Elect. She is a member of Eta Kappa Nu, Tau Beta Pi, the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), the Society of Women Engineers and the National Society of Black Engineers, and serves on the Board of Directors for ASEE. Leadership Studies and Sustainable Buildings: Leadership Studies Taking the Lead, Gary Schuberth

Gary Schuberth graduated Texas Tech University with a Bachelor of Architecture. A licensed architect for over twenty-five years, Gary is currently the design manager for the Kansas City office of Opus. He is the design architect for the new Leadership Studies building at Kansas State University, which will be the first LEED building on campus.
