West of the Turtle Mountain Reservation, Rolette County, North Dakota
The Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa is a segment of the Chippewa Tribe based on the Turtle Mountain Reservation in Rolette County, North Dakota. The Tribe has 30,000 enrolled members. A population of 5,815 reside on the main reservation and another 2,516 reside on off-reservation trust land, according to the 2000 census.
The EPA awarded a National Brownfields Pilot Grant to the Tribe in 1998, a supplemental assistance grant in 2000, and an assessment grant in 2003. The Turtle Mountain Planning Department administers the EPA grants for the purpose of site assessment and development of a remediation plan for the San Haven facility. The San Haven facility was a state-operated institution for the mentally retarded from 1934 until 1985. The Tribe intends to maintain ownership of the property and desires to renovate the San Haven facility and establish an economic venture or historic site on the property.
