The City of St. Joseph has received U.S. EPA funding for a Brownfields Pilot project. The goal of the project is to create an atmosphere in the riverfront industrial area, south of St. Joseph's historical downtown area, that will remove environmental uncertainty and attract new investment. The project is intended to ultimately remove blight, raise property values and generate economic vitality in the area. The brownfields area is bound by the downtown central business district on the north (Charles Street), the Missouri River on the west, a low and moderate-income neighborhood on the east (8th Street), and Highway 36 on the south. The total area comprises about 244 acres.
