Site Description

Since 1997, the City of Des Moines, Iowa, has been awarded several EPA Brownfields grants. The Office of Economic Development for the City of Des Moines administers and implements these grants. Activities under these grants range from supporting the assessment of potential environmental contamination and assessment of issues related to environmental cleanup, financing, and redevelopment of specific properties to an overall GIS based inventory of potential redevelopment areas.

Summary of TAB Assistance

The TAB program performed the following activities to assist the Des Moines Office of Economic Development:

• Provide input for solicitations for contracted environmental assessment services.
• Provide development considerations for the Des Moines Agribusiness Park by assessing information on the types of businesses that are compatible or incompatible, including land use and infrastructure needs.
• Provide information on pollution prevention considerations for agribusiness concerns and auto salvage operations.
• Assemble information regarding viable environmental remediation strategies applicable to the Des Moines Agribusiness Park.
• Develop a web-based inventory of environmental and other information for properties with redevelopment potential. The web site combines static and dynamic data from maps, text documents, and photographic images, according to user preference. The purpose of the web site is to encourage relationships between the City of Des Moines, potential developers and the community.
